Review: Obstacle Race Training – How To Beat Any Course, Compete Like a Champion and Change Your Life

For me, the best section of the book was the ‘Turning You Backyard into a Training Center". I am always looking at ways to build or provide ways to get more of an actual race experience at home, and this section of the book gave me a ton of tools to get my training above and beyond what I thought it could be. I will be working on my own wall very shortly with the easy steps provided in this book.

Tough Mudder ’14: A Kinder, Friendlier, and Easier Mudder?

From the moment Chris & I stepped out of my Jeep, we could tell the vibe was different. Folks waiting to get in were relaxed, the staff was pretty chill, security guards were smiling and helpful - heck, everyone was smiling and helpful. This was not the intense TM experience I expected - and I couldn't have been more pleased. After I signed in and grabbed my media badge I headed over to the Mudder Legion booth to grab a 2x wristband to ensure my access on the exclusive Legion Loop.

I was the girl who pretended to be happy; the girl who would smile to keep from crying, because deep in my heart I was disgusted with what I saw in the mirror. I avoided taking pictures because I didn’t like the images the camera captured and I avoided shopping with my mom and sister, because I knew when we entered the store they would be able to shop for average sizes and I would have to go to the plus sizes. I hated the life that I had made for myself, but continued to let food be my ruler. I felt like no diet or gym had ever worked, so why keep trying when you keep failing? I gave up on getting healthy.

We conquered the course with our team and were ready to tackle the Tough Mudder Virginia the following month. Again, we faced another big hurdle… Tropical Storm Andrea came through the night before and tore apart the course, flooding the James River (which was part of the course as well).

Although running is not a passion of mine, it is great training for the obstacle course racing. The best thing about Obstacle Course Racing is that it provides a challenge for everyone from elite racers, to athletes in training (like me), to those just starting out. It fosters team work and encourages us to become better humans. I never believed in a million years that I would be able to complete a Tough Mudder or a Spartan race.

I don’t let diabetes stop me from doing things, I never have and I never will. It is just an extra obstacle that I have to face. Over the couple of years I have been doing OCRs I have helped a number of other people with diabetes learn how they can do these events or any other event. I don’t hide the fact that I have diabetes, in fact I will tell it to anyone who asks, ‘Why are you running with that pack?’ or ‘What are you doing?’ when I stop and a water station and start pulling things out of my pack.

                    “Tough Love”

After meeting my boyfriend, we created a specialized program to help with my weaknesses and to focus on strength building for OCRs. I had realized over the prior race season which muscles needed the most work, and I incorporated lower lifting to assist with my running capability. Long story, short--with the new training, I began racing in the Elite category, and I won my first race in 2013. I did considerably better throughout the race season, and I was on track for participating in World’s 2013.
