World’s Toughest Mudder 2015 is almost upon us. Racers will take to the start line on November 14, 2015 at Lake Las Vegas for the second year. The community is buzzing on all social networks. Before TMHQ lets too many more details slip I felt it was time to get some things many are feeling out in the open.
Tough Mudder Philly was originally scheduled to be one of the first events of 2015 in the Pocono Mountains. For unknown reasons, the event was rescheduled for mid October and changed locations to Coatesville, Pa. The Saturday/Sunday combo welcomed Mudders to the small town located about an hour west of Philadelphia. The lasting memory of this event will likely be the chilly weather that hung around all weekend proving to be the extra obstacle which seemed most difficult to prepare for. This coming weekend marks a historic moment in the eyes of Tough Mudder Legionnaires. Two of the athletes highlighted in my previous article on Mud Run Guide, The Multi-Lap Legionnaires are on the verge of hitting 100 Tough Mudders at Tough Mudder Missouri.
Leading up to the Spartan World Championship, and the International Obstacle Racing Federation’s first World Congress, there has been a lot of talk about the “sport” aspect of obstacle course racing.
Let's talk about the brands that are the bedrock of OCR. As the sport has grown over the last 3-4 years, one thing has stood out: there are a few brands that are the biggest and best - the Chili's or Chipotle of the sport; you always know (within reason) what you're going to get when you show up. You're not going to be (too) surprised with the event, as there reputation of quality precedes them.
All of these events are big on fun, and in descending order of difficulty. WIPEOUTRUN is the easiest, all the way down to Spartan Race Sprint as the hardest "beginner-friendly" races. If you're looking for a good reason to get muddy and experience an actual mud run/obstacle course race with guys and gals, our best suggestion is to start with Warrior Dash. Yeah, we know you're the adventurous type - but recommend getting at least one OCR under your belt before you move up to Spartan Race Sprint; even the short distance is pretty darn difficult with mandatory obstacle completion (the only one on this list that requires it)!
It goes without saying, when you hear the name “Tough Mudder” you picture getting down and dirty. The Pittsburgh event for my second year in a row has delivered big time, only in two different ways. Last year’s event located at Powerline Park, in Southeastern Ohio, was mud drenched throughout the course. It was my first try at any OCR and I thought they would all be as muddy. Unfortunately however, I was wrong. Most of the Tough Mudders this year in the Mid-Atlantic have been on the dry side with spots of mud only here and there, leaving Mudders with a thirst for more mud in their mouth.
Legionnaires are members of the Tough Mudder (TM) community that have completed more than one event. Although they do not have a separate name, there is a smaller subset of athletes that I call the Multi-Lap Legionnaires.
