Last Week in OCR: Mother’s Day Edition

By |May 9th, 2016|

If there was ever any doubt that the obstacle racing season was in full swing this weekend with over 50 races around the world happening at the same time put all doubts to rest. Both Spartan Race and Tough Mudder were in three different locations over the weekend as well as all the other major American series racing around the country. Internationally, XMan Race Series was in Toronto, Toughest in Sweden, Rat Race Dirty Weekend in the United Kingdom and more. Mother's Day Weekend did not stop many of the top athletes around the world from toeing the line. We bring you some of the highlights from the weekend in this week's Last Week in OCR.

Last Week in OCR – May 1st Edition

By |May 2nd, 2016|

This is the race SO many of you have been waiting for since the season kicked off. While Saturday racers had to rely on the insanity of the course itself, Sunday racers were treated to proof that Norm Koch has indeed made some dirty deals with a particular underground entity. Rain, wind and cold took out many a racer on this already incredibly challenging course, and even without all that on Saturday, when it came to numbers on the UB, over 800 started, but less than half finished.

Can I Set You up on a Blind Date?

By |April 28th, 2016|

Do you remember that girl who sat two seats in front of you during your Intro to Economics class during your sophomore year? You know, that awful 8:00am class that you barely passed because you happened to ditch on the day the professor basically gave out all of the answers for the upcoming final.

World’s Toughest Mudder 2016 Rule Changes! The Controversy, the Intrigue (Part 1)

By |April 26th, 2016|

Tough Mudder changes the rules in their signature championship event, World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM), every year. With each change, there is great controversy and great potential. Sometimes the rule changes are in response to feedback or problems they encountered in previous years, or sometimes they just like to change it up. Before I describe the first announced rule changes, I’ll preface the controversy with this. In sports, and especially OCRs, we rely on the organizers to define the rules of engagement, and we challenge ourselves to do our best within those confines.

Race Recap – Tough Mudder, LA

By |April 21st, 2016|

This weekend marked the return of Tough Mudder to Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, and the debut of the Tough Mudder Half on Sunday. Saturday dawned cool and very windy, requiring several of the venue tents to be reinforced. This wind would keep gusting as the day warmed up, often creating minor sandstorms across the dry hills.

Last Week in OCR: Tough Mudder Kicks off 2016 Season

By |April 18th, 2016|

If we needed any proof that the OCR season is underway, the last couple of weeks has surely proven it. Internationally, some of our favorite races peppered the globe, with London South England Dirty Dozen, Sydney Australia Raw Challenge, Madrid Spain Farinato Race, and Munich Germany Spartan Sprint. In the US, we were no slouches ourselves, hitting both coasts and plenty of states in between, our community took the country by storm and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Warrior Dash is Vital to OCR, and to Me. Here’s Why.

By |April 15th, 2016|

Year-in and year-out, Warrior Dash proves its worth as being one of the best mud runs for beginners, as I wrote in this article on that subject last year. One could argue their obstacles and event is somewhat formulaic, and that's exactly what I want! When I'm recommending a race for first-timers or fun-seekers - whether to millions of people* or a group of parents and teachers at my daughter's school, I want to know they are going to get a safe, fun, experience that I know each and every one of them can handle. Period.

Obstacle Course Racing has continued to grow into a global sport in the last couple of years. While the United States still dominates the market Europe, Australia, Central America, and South Africa also have strong foundations of the sport in their regions. In the last two years, the industry has continued to expand and grow throughout the rest of the world. The latest target from the large multi-national companies is Asia and the Middle East.
