Tough Mudder Teams Up With Team Rubicon

Today, Tough Mudder announced a multi-year partnership with Team Rubicon, the only nonprofit disaster response organization that mobilizes military veterans to support communities devastated by natural disasters. The comprehensive charity partnership aims to raise $1.5 million by year-end 2017 – one of the largest monetary donations in Team Rubicon's six-year history – and to drive volunteer participation across the nation by activating Tough Mudder's passionate community of 2.5 million veterans and civilians.

Just like the UFC went from sponsors such as Mickey’s malt liquor and the Condom Depot to the likes of Bud Light and Reebok, most of the major OCR brands are now enjoying premium sponsorships and major media contracts.

While most people will never make it to Tibet to scale the largest mountain in the world, for us in the OCR world we only have to go as far as out local Tough Mudder to conquer Everest. Over the years, Everest has gotten bigger and tougher. This slick quarter pipe is over 15’ tall, with a recurved top to make it extra hard to get that handhold. Today is all about Everest 2.0 as part of #ObstacleWeek.

The Tough Mudder community has cast their votes for the obstacles they most love. Starting Monday, Tough Mudder will release new videos capturing your favorite obstacles in action as well as other epic announcements each day of the week.

Following the Monterey Spartan Super on Saturday, I had the chance to don a new cap, this time as a movie critic as I took in the premiere of the "Rise of the Sufferfests" documentary that has been lovingly crafted by Scott Keneally. Now, I'm no Leonard Maltin, but I know what I like, and frequently that revolves more around the Marvel Universe, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings than any dry and stale documentary.

This was a great course! The light rain made for a perfect storm of both challenge and fun. In 2016, Tough Mudder has thrown more team-building obstacles into the course. In a non-timed event, the teamwork element allowed many mudders including myself, a chance to hang around obstacles and help others out. I am already excited for my next Tough Mudder event!

The American psychologist Abraham Maslow famously wrote about what he called the Hierarchy of Human Needs in 1943, which explained the path that human motivation travels. The most basic needs are of course physiological – think “water,” “food,” “air” – but you know what else makes an appearance in the hierarchy? Esteem, which includes self-esteem. Translation: we need this sort of affirmation in our lives.
