SoCal Spartan Weekend – A Study in Contrasts

By |February 7th, 2016|

Spartan Race kicked off its 2016 season in Southern California last weekend with back to back races at Vail Lake in Temecula. Immediately obvious on arriving at the venue was the distressing lack of water in the lake; with a drop of at least 10-15’ of depth since our last visit back in September, it was clear that the long California drought is far from over. This also left exposed a vast mud plain that was once the lake bottom and would play a role in the race.

Not only was this BattleFrog's first event on the West Coast, but it was also the first time that Pro Athlete Ryan Atkins took on the role of course designer. Ignite the Night Snowshoe Race – Race Recap

By |January 22nd, 2016|

As the rain poured down and temperatures reached a balmy 6 degrees, we were a little hesitant if the snow would suffice for the 2nd annual Dion Ignite the Night Snowshoe Race. We packed a variety of outer wear and hit the road heading east about 90 minutes. We were excited that we were finally going to meet some of our fellow racers from online forums and this was a central meeting point that worked for 20 of us from Ottawa, Toronto, Kingston and Montreal.

For Chris Kyle: The Glen Rose Double Beast Weekend

By |November 23rd, 2015|

Some of you know me as the Chairman of the Chris Kyle Memorial Run that we hold every year in conjunction with the Spartan Beast in Glen Rose, Tx. The reason we do this at THIS race is that it's held, every year, at Rough Creek Ranch, the same location where Chris and his friend Chad Littlefield were shot and killed in February of 2013 while trying to help a former Marine suffering from severe PTSD.

Tough Mudder Tristate – Race Recap

By |November 17th, 2015|

The Tough Mudder crew set up shop this year in one of the most amazing locations imaginable. The 10+ mile course was literally along the New York Harbor. Mudders spent the weekend with a little less mud than what you would expect at a typical event; however the views of the Statue of Liberty and The New York skyline made this an unforgettable event.

By |June 16th, 2015|

When deciding my 2015 schedule, I researched races in England, Canada, and America and set a goal of trying to do almost every OCR race that looked amazing. When I researched the Xman Race and watched the videos I found, I could tell it was a great race and I decided right away I wanted to do an Xman Race. I drove from New York to Canada on Friday night.

Race Review: Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Jail-Break Challenge

By |June 15th, 2015|

This is the third year that the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has opened up their state of the art Law Enforcement Obstacle Training Course to the general public, and this little Local event keeps getting better. While not a traditional OCR where you run for short distances in between obstacles that are spread out, this is more like a 5k trail run around the jail with a nicely challenging obstacle course bunched up at the end.

Race Review: Bone Frog Challenge

By |May 28th, 2015|

The Bonefrog Challenge recently returned for the third year to the New England area and I had the privilege to attend the event for the first time. The regional race, created by Navy SEALs and appropriately held on Armed Forces Day each year, was developed to test athletes to move beyond their comfort zones and push themselves both physically and mentally. With a course that boasts over 50 obstacles and 10 miles of rugged, mountainous terrain, it definitely accomplishes this goal in spades. The aptly named race is truly a challenge and requires athletes to be functionally fit to complete the course.
