Your Intense, My Intense. Similar and Yet So Different…

By |May 11th, 2016|

If you have ever been at the finish line of an obstacle race or mud, run you have probably heard someone utter those words after crossing the finish line caked in mud, bruised, and often bleeding from a scrape earned while on the course. We have all felt it at one time in our racing career, that rush of excitement after a, particularly challenging obstacle. We have all seen that face that a fellow racer makes when they finally get over that 8-foot wall or climb that rope. It's that intangible sense of excitement that can hardly be described and truly only felt by the participant.

Op-Ed: What the New BFX Rules Really Mean.

By |May 6th, 2016|

This is a case of BattleFrog putting their money where their brand is. No, I don't mean that muscular frog with stubble and an attitude, I mean the whole “bands over burpees” thing. The “O” in “OCR” does not stand for “optional”, as most purists would point out. I could not agree more (especially since I just came up with that catchy saying), and I imagine that most elite and seriously competitive racers would agree.

Can I Set You up on a Blind Date?

By |April 28th, 2016|

Do you remember that girl who sat two seats in front of you during your Intro to Economics class during your sophomore year? You know, that awful 8:00am class that you barely passed because you happened to ditch on the day the professor basically gave out all of the answers for the upcoming final.

Please Spell the Word “Sport”

By |April 6th, 2016|

When you boil it down, what we’re discussing is a matter of semantics. Is it a sport? Yes, it is. At least…it is in the most common understanding of the word. Let me elaborate…

Going to the Xtreme: Part 2: Do I need to shave my body?

By |March 15th, 2016|

Now that you have adopted your spandex shorts and are feeling race ready you take a look in the mirror but something does not seem right. You do not look like those elite racers lining up on the starting line from last weekend, so what gives? It is not that something is missing, it is that you still have something…body hair.

Going to the Xtreme: Part 1: Are Spandex Shorts Right for Me?

By |March 8th, 2016|

Now that BattleFrog Xtreme 24 is over, you may be thinking it is time to take other aspects of your Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) life to the extreme. Recently, you have been lining up at Obstacle Course Races and started to notice something spreading amongst the athletes in the front of the field. It began as an isolated overly excited ex-triathlete who transitioned into OCR and has spread to other athletes.

Op-Ed: The Pen is Mightier…

By |January 26th, 2016|

Recently, I was peripherally involved in an article that helped open my eyes in a number of ways. It was an article that raised questions about safety at BattleFrog Series, a relative newcomer to the world of OCR with grand ambitions, who wants to position itself as one of the big players in the market space.

Life Lessons We Could Learn From OCR

By |December 26th, 2015|

Growing up, I lived my childhood with my mother and teenage years with my father. The two households couldn't have been more different but still valuable lessons were gleaned from both.

Sponsorship Part 4: Reasons to Get Sponsored

By |December 23rd, 2015|

Getting sponsored is an awesome feeling. However, most people have mismanaged expectations. The bottom line is your sponsor will provide you with product or entry to things that costs them little to no money. Their return on investing in you needs to be greater than the cost. Otherwise, it is not worth it to them. So if you are expecting your local gym to pay you hundreds of dollars just for exercising at their location, you need to adjust those expectations.

BattleFrog Championship 2015 Orlando – A Great Race…That No One Else Got to See

By |December 16th, 2015|

When I go to a race, I never really know what I'm going to write about afterwards. So, arriving at the BattleFrog Championship in Orlando later in the week than usual, I found that Mud Run Guide needed someone to take some "live action" photos of the elites along the actual course on race day.
