Savage Race, Ohio – Race Recap

By |June 20th, 2016|

Mad River Mountain: Zanesville OH was the sight for this year’s Savage Race Ohio.  The event has been held at this location for some years, and the success of the Savage series would not disappoint. A hot morning brought the competitors to the Mad River Mountain ski facility in Zanesfield, OH (a short distance Northwest of Columbus).  Serene farmlands entailed the drive up to the location in the rural area; with its unassuming lack of hills?  Rounding the last turn unveiled where they were hiding, and Savage Race found them.

#ObstacleWeek Continues with Everest 2.0

By |June 14th, 2016|

While most people will never make it to Tibet to scale the largest mountain in the world, for us in the OCR world we only have to go as far as out local Tough Mudder to conquer Everest. Over the years, Everest has gotten bigger and tougher. This slick quarter pipe is over 15’ tall, with a recurved top to make it extra hard to get that handhold. Today is all about Everest 2.0 as part of #ObstacleWeek.

BattleFrog and the BFX Rule Changes – Creating Their Own Controversy and Problems

By |May 8th, 2016|

Why in the name of Odin would you want to do something that would even have the possibility of reducing attendance? Did this not occur to anyone? The feedback from the average racer, looking to move up a notch in challenge has been overwhelmingly bad! And remember, people "vote with their feet!". For every comment, there are dozens who feel the same and just won't be considering your race.

BattleFrog Series Update – BFX Rule Change

By |May 3rd, 2016|

Since the inception of BattleFrog’s BFX, there have been several changes to tighten and hone the design to accommodate the growing numbers. But since the very first representation, the one thing that the athletes have called out for, was mandatory obstacle completion. Okay racers…you spoke, they listened. Race Recap – Quarry Crusher Run

By |April 19th, 2016|

The Quarry Crusher Run is in its 5th year? Why haven’t I run this before? The Quarry Crusher Run Series is held in 4 states (SC, GA, AL, MD). The SC run was held at the Vulcan Materials Company Quarry in Columbia. The race started a few city blocks from the quarry. Once you hit the quarry you went down into the quarry all the way to the bottom (they’re still digging!) and then painfully all the way back up. The out and back course averaged a 10% grade over about 3.7 miles.

Warrior Dash is Vital to OCR, and to Me. Here’s Why.

By |April 15th, 2016|

Year-in and year-out, Warrior Dash proves its worth as being one of the best mud runs for beginners, as I wrote in this article on that subject last year. One could argue their obstacles and event is somewhat formulaic, and that's exactly what I want! When I'm recommending a race for first-timers or fun-seekers - whether to millions of people* or a group of parents and teachers at my daughter's school, I want to know they are going to get a safe, fun, experience that I know each and every one of them can handle. Period.

Race Recap: Warrior Dash SoCal – Are They Even Trying Anymore?

By |March 22nd, 2016|

In 2012, my wife Anne and a couple of her friends did a Warrior Dash as one of her first obstacle course races. At the time, I was sidelined with an injury, and although I've done dozens of different OCRs in the intervening years, I had never done a Warrior Dash before last weekend. As a result, I was excited to give this one a try, as I've heard for years about Warrior Dash being one of "the big three" and the "gateway drug to OCR".
