Warrior Dash is Vital to OCR, and to Me. Here’s Why.

By |April 15th, 2016|

Year-in and year-out, Warrior Dash proves its worth as being one of the best mud runs for beginners, as I wrote in this article on that subject last year. One could argue their obstacles and event is somewhat formulaic, and that's exactly what I want! When I'm recommending a race for first-timers or fun-seekers - whether to millions of people* or a group of parents and teachers at my daughter's school, I want to know they are going to get a safe, fun, experience that I know each and every one of them can handle. Period.

At BattleFrog, ‘BF’ Now Means “Beginner Friendly”

By |March 28th, 2016|

BattleFrog Series is nothing if not ambitious; scaling an event from 3-6 events is a big deal, and moving into a new state is fraught with difficulty on levels of magnitude to putting on an event in your home market - ask any race company in (or out) of business now. What BFS did is beyond definition, and beyond reckless for any other event to even attempt. The sport is littered with the carcasses of races that tried, yet this is not a homage to their failures, it's a nod to the audacity of BattleFrog's ownership and executive management; they have a plan of action that would make any CPA tremble.

Savage Race ’16 Season Kicks Off with a Bang!

By |March 25th, 2016|

The 7+ mile course was packed with 27 obstacles, including favorites such as the baddest monkey bars in OCR, Sawtooth, and last year's innovative Wheel World, ranking up there with Savage's famous Colossus and Davy Jones' Locker. 5 obstacles were innovative, brand-spankin' new ones making their Savage debut

Race Recap – Spartan Houston – The Deluge!

By |March 21st, 2016|

March 12, just northwest of Houston, was the first time Spartan Race hit any city in Texas other than Burnet and Glen Rose. Spirits were high, as was the sun and the flood gauge. Nature decided to throw everything possible at the Spartan build crew. That means three things in Texas: rain, ants and snakes. Couple those in with a well laid out course and some great obstacle placement, you have yourself a great race for the first heats, and a progressively more dilapidated course the later you ran.

Berserkr Games Race Recap

By |March 18th, 2016|

Berserkr Games is not your typical OCR. This race takes place annually in mid-March, in Kingsville, TX at Rifles Only. First of all, you take a thrilling helicopter ride around the property before dropping into a chilly pond to start the race. The course is a flat 2.7 miles, which you can do up to four laps depending on which of the four race distances you are running.

Spartan Kids Race AZ

By |March 3rd, 2016|

Spartan Race rolled into Arizona on Saturday, February 27, 2016 with a sprint distance of just over 4 miles. As they do at every US Spartan Race in 2016, two types were offered for the Kid's Race, the 1/2 mile "Jr. Varsity" and the 1 mile "Varsity" distances.

SoCal Spartan Weekend – A Study in Contrasts

By |February 7th, 2016|

Spartan Race kicked off its 2016 season in Southern California last weekend with back to back races at Vail Lake in Temecula. Immediately obvious on arriving at the venue was the distressing lack of water in the lake; with a drop of at least 10-15’ of depth since our last visit back in September, it was clear that the long California drought is far from over. This also left exposed a vast mud plain that was once the lake bottom and would play a role in the race.

BattleFrog Atlanta II – If It’s Raining This Must Be Atlanta – Race Review

By |November 18th, 2015|

If it's raining, this must be Atlanta! For the third Atlanta race in a row, there was rain on Friday night into Saturday. And for the second race in a row, it was on top of already rain saturated ground. But there was a difference...for me anyway...the rain and humidity during the week caused my tent to feel like a soggy pretzel with not-cleaned-yet t-shirts tossed in the corners...soaking up pools of condensed water. This was actually making the idea of sloshing through extreme amounts of mud and water at the BattleFrog race seem quite attractive!
