Disappointed
We signed up for race back in January because of a discount special but after today we found ourselves very disappointed in the up keep of the obstacles and how poorly ran it was. I’ve run many mud runs such as Spartans, warrior dashes, and tough mudders and this one was by far the toughest because all of the obstacles had no attendants so they became very dangerous and I typically look forward to them but not this time. On top of it all at 130pm they ran out of water to shower off so poor planning for sure. The only reason I gave it 2 stars and not 1 is because the Monkey metal was neat and I liked the shirt but overall I won’t be signing up again next year
A joke
I love obstacle races have done plenty through the yrs, but this by far is the worst one. It was Poorly ran with no guidance on the track or off the track. Not many vendors, lack of changing stationg stations. The obstacles were also a joke. Very disappointing
Waiting to get paid.
I liked: the location (local pumpkin patch), the cost ($50 groupon competitive wave), and the obstacles (well built and somewhat challenging).
What I disliked was that I won the competitive wave and have yet to receive the award money, even after over a month of waiting and several emails to their "finance" department that they directed me to. Also, many of the obstacles had no volunteers or staff at them, so when I ran a second lap in an open wave (competitive pricing gives you unlimited laps) there was a huge line of people at the orange, sideways rock climbing wall/peg board obstacle. There was no one there to direct them, so people thought they had to climb back and forth over top of the obstacle. This took FOREVER, and seemed dangerous. Once directed by myself and other onlookers, the obstacle went much smoother, but I felt they should of had at least one person there to monitor it.
I doubt I'll do another Terrain Race again if they fall through on their awards.
Gateway was cool location for us as usually have to travel at least an hour but most of the mud/water was way past disgusting I think a lot of venues are man made so we call that clean mud but Gateway mud looked and smelled hazardous Definitely entry level have done most of well known mudruns in the area and this is cheapest don't think I will do this again.
No cold water
The race itself is fun. Not too crowded. No ice cold beverages etc unless you pay. $4 for a cold water. The water provided during the race is lukewarm. No showers just a truck spraying water. It had a very long line. Overall ok.
Family Fun
Terrain Race is NOT a Spartan Beast. Let's just accept that. That's why the minimum age limit to run is 7 with a parent. So we can't compare the obstacles in Terrain Race to Spartan or TM. Plus the price point is a fraction of those. All we can ask of Terrain Race is for an orderly check in, a quick way to clean up afterwards, and something fun to do in between.
When I got to the Terrain Race in New Jersey on August 4th, 2018 with my 13 yr old daughter the check in was orderly and quick - it took us 5 mins to go from signing waiver, check in, bathroom stop, bag check to starting line. The course itself was on a motocross track that dipped into the woods for a bit before coming back into the open mud pit. Same venue as Bonefrog last year, but with the rain this year, entirely different. Plus, TR isn't Bonefrog, did I say that already?
And when I say mud, I mean mud. Race day followed a rainy week, and the morning had seriously heavy rainfall. The ground was so muddy - 4-5 inches of soft stuff in some spots, that it was impossible to run. But you take what the course gives you sometimes and make the best of it. It was hilarious for us, frustrating for others.
I'm not sure if the mud was the problem, or if the short track was at fault (I heard the 5K was only 2.6 miles), or the fact that TR usually brings out many OCR first timers, but most obstacles had long lines. There is no hurry, no timing chip, but still, its a little boring to wait for each rig, tire flip, and wall to climb over. And TR did pack a lot of obstacles into those 2.6 miles. I would say 65% were easy (short walls, mud pits, heavy carrys, cargo nets), 25% medium (rope climb, monkey bars, 8 ft wall), 10% hard (a rig or 2 at the end had a big failure rate, as far as I could tell). That's a good mix for a beginners course.
Normally I just drive home after a race, but my daughter wanted a few minutes under the hose. Unfortunately there was one garden hose for hundreds of people, and some people brought soap! After 30 mins of not moving on line, we decided a water bottle rinse was good enough.
SO, Terrain Race is family fun. It's a no-pressure OCR race with a lot of not very hard obstacles. If there was less wait at each obstacle, and a real clean up area, they can really control the niche of beginner OCR enthusiast.
No beer at the end. This is my third year doing this race and it has been going down hill every year. Ive done the compedsrive heat twice now and getting there in the morning, they are very unorganized and checking in takes longer than it should. The course wasn’t well marked and several sections runners had to stop and figure out which way to go next and some people accidentally cut out portions of the race because they skipped it. I did not feel the rigs were very sturdy and some felt dangerous while climbing them. I will not be running this race again next year. (Not got first time racers)
Solid experience
This was the 4th or 5th Terrain Race I've ran and every time has proven to be a good experience. The obstacles are good, the festival area is good, I love the finisher medals, the price is great and their customer service is incredible (especially when compared to some of the bigger races).
I'm surprised to hear of other complaints (i.e. no finisher shirts or even water on the course or added fees). While I have to say the finisher t-shirts aren't the greatest quality, they're still pretty good and there has always been water on the courses I've run. Fees for parking, bag check and insurance is expected and are in line with other race series.
Terrain Race puts on a good race and is very family friendly. My young twins loved it when they ran the kid's course a few years ago and love it even more now that they do the full course with me.
not worth it
The race entry itself wasn't expensive, but then every little thing cost extra, including parking and shirts. Who doesn't include shirts in the entry fee?? It made something that seemed cheap at first way more expensive, and it felt deceptive and kind of mean. Also, putting pictures up in "a week or two" is not acceptable. Most races have them up within a day or two at the most. I will not be doing a Terrain Race again.
Stay away!
This event was horrible! No water on the course and it was 95+ degrees. No staff or medics on course. No after party. Check out their Facebook events. They are changing event dates and not offering refunds. They owe their photographers money. They are rude to people. They are also deleting people’s comments so you may not get to see just how bad they are, but check their bbb rating!
