Costs more than advertised
So ... it's not a terrible deal ... BUT ... there's some sketchy "extra fees" that aren't really told to you originally that you should know about.
Whatever you think that you're paying for the race ... add $20 for parking ($10 seems normal, $20 seems excessive) and $5 per person to pick-up your packet. They'll let you pick-up for free the day before ... but at a location they know is inconvenient for most runners and at hours that a person working in "Houston" (where the race is "held") couldn't make it back from leaving at 5 or 5:30. So pretty much everyone pays that, and many people in line are surprised when they hear that (in line, when they get their packet).
The race itself isn't a Spartan ... but it's not bad. For $40 a ticket (including all fees), it's good stuff. Low level obstacles ... crowds at some of them that aren't worth the wait ... but still, a fun time. At, say $65 or $80 / person after day-of-event fees, it is questionably not worth it.
WTF (where's the faculty)
This is my second review of Terrain Race, and it has gotten considerably worse! First off, packet pickup; we were sent an email stating that packet pickup would be the day before at Dick's Sporting Goods. If you decided to wait until race day, it'd cost you $5. I went, and the line to get the packet (aka bib only) stretched from the door, to the back wall, and around to the side wall, and back towards the front of the store. After getting in line, I hear that they RAN OUT OF BIBS! How did that happen!? You know people want to save money, and time, on race day. Shouldn't you have a minimum of the same number of bibs, as registered runners? An hour later, more bibs arrived, making my time spent there...an hour and 25mins.
The next day, race day, traffic was backed up a good distance from the gates to get into the race venue. I've been to several OCR's now, never has it been this backed up. Took about an hour from traffic stopping to finally parking the car. Got up to the start gate 2mins before our wave went off. Not one person checked for bibs, or start time. We could have started whenever we wanted too! We could have cheated the system and photo copied one bib and had a bunch of others run for free! On to the actual run, it was lackluster at best. A couple fun obstacles, a few random mud pits that were no more than calf deep, a couple walls to jump over, etc. When we finished, I didn't even need to hand over the tab from the bib for my shirt, it was almost a complete free-for-all. Again, I could have gotten more than one shirt, if I really wanted to.
Terrain did a soft relaunch this year, and charged "free" admission to race, and it showed. The series is going in the wrong direction, and being I wasted about 2 1/2hrs waiting for parking and packet pickup, yet only ran for about an hour, it certainly wasn't worth it. When/if they come back to Tucson in 2020, I won't be participating a third time.
Kind of a scam
I’m not sure the event deserves even one star. The description of the event was completely inaccurate. There was no timing chip to record your time even though the event promised it in the description, and we paid an extra fee to get that chip timing for the competitive heat. There was also no post race activity as described on the event website. The finish and start area was just kind of an empty construction lot with no Pre or post race festivities, food, or drinks at all. They also didn’t give out the prizes they promised for podium finishers as states on their website. I finished 2nd but when I tried contacting Terrain Race for my prize money, they kept dodging my questions after I Italy saying they would look into it for me. Then they went radio silent via email and on Facebook. The event was Oct 2018. It has now been almost 6 months and I still haven’t made any progress in getting my prize money.
So, in conclusion, this is hands down the worst race I’ve ever participated in. They lied, took out money, and refused to deliver on what they promised in many aspects. Do not sign up for this race.
Venue was beautiful. Good 1st mud race...not too difficult, for two of my friends. However, was disappointed that there was no direction at some of the obstacles, and one of the obstacles wasn't even assembled...or had fallen apart from earlier waves of runners. It was also a bit unnerving that there were 0 fire/paramedics on the course, sans the last obstacle..monkey bars, which were right by finish area. One runner fell off of the obstacles and landed flat on his back. Luckily, he wasn't injured...and continued the race, but it was scary that no one was there/near that I saw, if he had injured himself and needed medical attention. I know we all signed a waiver...BUT..no one working race was around in case someone really did need help.
Overall, a good experience...just needs some more direction at obstacles and more paramedics staged throughout course.
Nickle and Dime You To Death
It was advertised as free. So me and my family decided why not give it a try. Then when you sign up, there is a $13 Fee for signing the waiver and an $1 mandatory donation to a charity, Which I was fine with even though I thought it was kind of shady to advertise as free. but then they really start to nickle and dime you, they encourage people to pick up their racing packets the day before the race, but I live 1 hour and 30 minutes away from the race location, so I could not pick it up the day before. The week of the race you are informed that you will also have to pay a $5 fee for picking up your race packet on the day of the race, so there was another $25 I would have to spend + $10 parking fee. I have 4 children under 11 years old that were looking forward to the race, but one of them ended up with an ear infection and we were told that we would not be able to take him to the race. I signed up through active.com which showed that we could protect our purchase in case of an emergency, and receive our money back, we paid for that, but if you ask the organizers they say they can't give you the money back, good thing I went through a 3rd party and paid for protection, because otherwise I would have been out $85 for something unforeseen happening. I really wanted to run the coarse and feel like it would have been fun, but just seems like the whole set up is kind of shady.
The only thing that saved this race from getting 1 start was the beautiful venue. The obstacles were very lazily assembled, and one was just laying on the ground unassembled. Next to no instructions are given, other than "don't dive in the water" which was actually good advice, seeing as they continually just made the course run through the frigid lake. Very little mud ironically, and all of the photographers were centered around that one obstacle - but what mud there was immediately came off on the bright white event shirt.
3/9/19 Atlanta
I hate that my even isn't even listed on here but I thought the venue was great and me and my friends had alot of fun!
Would give 4 stars because I had fun, but there were more than a few obstacles with no explanation (abandoned) , such as the tire/sledgehammer obstacle. We had no idea what we were supposed to do, and werent told until the next obstacle, presumably by the woman who was supposed to be working the previous but was chatting with her friend 200m away. I would probably go for a spartan race or something else next time that had some more organization.
Horrible. WAY over-promised and under delivered. No water/mud. Dumb “obstacles”. $20 to park?? No organization. Terrible t-shirt. Waste of time and money. Embarrassment to OCR.
Absolute Worst OCR Experience
Ran the competitive wave in my first & only Terrain Race. The race was as advertised, 5K, boring obstacles and no merchandise. There were maybe 2 tshirt options, the rest were what was left over from previous events. This race was held 9-22-2018, and as of today, 2-28-2019, and after numerous emails, DM's, and comments on their social media, results and photos have still not been posted online. I would not be surprised if there actually are none; incredibly disappointed in the management of this race company. Also, terrain race is putting an awful image on the world of OCR. Don't spend your money on this race, instead wait for the free registration to come out. You're better off rolling around in mud in your yard & going for a jog around the block. 0/10 would not recommend. If I could give a 0/5 star rating I would.
