Terrain Racing obstacle races, mud run, and OCR information, distance, cost, dates, calendar, discounts, obstacles, reviews, and more

I ran the 5k elite heat in Houston. This was my first Terrain Race and first elite heat. I've done other OCRs open heat before.

1) I don't understand the idea of starting in a water tub (especially when it was 48*, but it did make for a good psychological obstacle.

2) On the monkey/hanging ball rig, the rules state you can use 2 lanes. The volunteer watching it yelled at me to only use one lane. Volunteers need to know the rules.

3) According to the website, the 5k competitors were supposed to get prize money, awards, podium time, etc.. They only did it for the 10k racers. I wasn't in contention for the podium but now I'm glad I wasn't because I would've been pissed.

4) No free beer? WTH?

5) The 2017 shirt design could use some work. My kids liked it and it looks like a kid shirt.

6) I will say the kids race was great and my kids liked it a lot.

Summary:
A good race that's trying to spread out. If they do some tweaking it'll be a lot better. I'd consider doing it again, but they need to take some of the reviews and make some improvements.

1st time racer

This was my first race. I did it to get my daughter out running this summer. We had a lot of fun. I've run 2 1/2 marathons, and a bunch of 5K's. This one seemed very unorganized, but it is my first mud / obstacle race. While we were waiting to start the final obstacle collapsed. Fortunately it looked like nobody was hurt. Because of that I was worried on all of the high obstacles with my daughter. The obstacles needed employees stationed at them, limiting the number of people on them at a time.
***If you take away the collapse and my worry, it was a four star event because of the cost. I am knocking it down to 3 because of the unprofessional, and frankly dangerous conditions. However, if you are safe, ok with just rolling with the puches, and looking for a fun run, this is it. By far the cheapest race I could find, which is why I was able to just go with the flow.

Not for Elite Racers

To be fair I signed up for both the competitive 10K and the open 5K so that I could run later in the day with my daughter and my girlfriend. The 5K was fine. The issue I have is with the competitive 10K....that I paid EXTRA to do!

1. No course map so it was very confusing for both myself and spectators plus the course was not well marked.
2. Unlike some other races the people manning the obstacles did not appear to work for terrain. They seemed for the most part to be disinterested and uninformed. One of them saw my GPS watch and asked ME what mile we were at in the middle of the race.
3. Most upsetting has been the inability to get the results for the race. If I pay extra to be in the competitive heat I would expect timely results. It's several days after the race and still no results. I've reached out to customer service via email, phone, and text and have received zero reply.

Side Note: while it didn't happen to me the final obstacle of the race collapsed sometime in between the competitive heat and when we ran our open heat.

Elite racers...don't bother!

good race, great price, one of the best finisher medals in OCR, monkey balls obstacle good finishing obstacle, really tested grip strength. Hope you come back to the burgh

Cheap and gimmicky: Avoid

1. The 10K race was not a full 10K and was poorly marked, leaving runners confused constantly.
2. The obstacles were cheap and easy, then the final obstacle (Monkey Balls) was near impossible.
3. If you do not complete Monkey Balls, you are DQ'd from the competitive wave, thus wasting the extra money you paid to run for prizes or placement. That is unfair for an obstacle so poorly designed.
4. Results were not posted at the race and, now, over 2 weeks later, still have not been posted.
5. Customer service is literally unresponsive, by email or by phone, and sent out a fake link to results that contained no information.

This is a cheap, gimmicky race that is poorly managed and poorly run. I would ask for a refund but no one can even get the management to respond!

Great Course For The Price

Lets be honest, when you can run an obstacle race for under $50 you just sign up, right? So I did, and how grateful I am that I did. Having run a slew obstacle course and mud run races in the past 5 years, I have seen the best of the best and worst of the worst. Terrain Race is in my top 10. Some reviews I'v read complain that the obstacles are too basic or that there aren't too many, but in my opinion, the obstacles were perfect. There were plenty of walls; 6-footers, 8-footers, and the 12-footers with a knotted rope and foot holds. There were also monkey bars and cargo nets. I agree with some statements that you get what you pay for, and for $35 what can you expect. Well, let me tell you that you can expect the event holders to live up to their name. This race made the best use of the terrain available and luckily for me, western Pennsylvania is full of hills, mud, rocky streams and even old mine shafts. That's not to say, however, that the terrain is the main obstacle. I was delighted to find tire flips, tire pulls, and a rope climb all conveniently located at the top of the largest hill on site. As for the infrastructure of the event, registration and packet pickup were a breeze. There were no lines and everything was very organized. The free bag check was very safe and secure and the changing tents, though a bit small, were private and sufficed. There were plenty of hoses provided to clean up with and the water pressure was enough to do the job. All in all, this was a great event, focused on both fun and being physically challenging. I hope to see more of these races in more locations, as well as back here in western PA next year.

My daughter and I have done myriad OCRs and this one fell short in many areas. The course itself lived up to it's name as it did have multiple terrain changes and quite honestly if they would have just taken a little more time to fix a couple of things it would have been real good. First of all OCR 101 - We do NOT want hot water at the hydration stations on a "10k" OCR! - I say 10k in quotes cause it was actually by multiple GPS devices 7.2 miles instead of 6.2. The other big problem was at the end, we wanted to buy a water (We were in the last wave) and they would not let us even though they had some in plain sight. The guy said his boss said he could not sell any more and the only thing available were the beers for the race tickets. That is all fine until you realize we just went through a 7+ mile OCR with nothing but hot water to hydrate! With all that, A bad day on the OCR circuit is still better than a good day on the couch! And on another positive note: I really do like the Terrain Race medal!

I do alot of obstacles races and this was by far one of the best, not to mention it was very affordable. Bad assistance medal to!

Terrain Race Portland

This by far the most challenging course we have raced yet! Perfect blend of terrain, obstacles and wave times. Although it seems groups form on the race course, we found that the course allowed people to break quickly. Love this race, cant wait to do it again next year!

good course, terrible lines

Having done this event last year and enjoyed it, I was greatly disappointed by the logistical failing of this years race. The lines were insane both on and off the course. The line for the last obstacle was so long that I just gave up and went home.
