Disappointed
I decided to try out the Muddy Princess Run and decided to volunteer at the event to be able to run for free. I volunteered for nearly 6 hours and got my chance to run. There were no volunteers at the obstacles, no medics, 2 water stations, but only 1 had cups. When we completed the race the sponsors were tearing down, there was no water to rinse off with and our bags in the bag check area were a free for all since nobody was checking wrist bands. I have asked, and emailed, to check on the pictures, but I haven't heard a word. The people who volunteer should be entitled to the same awards and efforts given to those who paid. The only thing that would make this remotely acceptable is to get the photos. Ridiculous to treat your volunteers with such little respect. Now, where are the pics?
Disappointing
Not worth the money. Pittsburgh was basically an all uphill hike with some generic "obstacles" through out, then all of the decent obstacles at the end.
Some of the "obstacles" included a sack race with broken bottoms, a balance beam over regular dirt, a rope swing that wasn't even over a ditch or mud or anything, crawling under different things (but most barely even had mud under them or none at all), an inflatable slide that was so dry you couldn't actually slide down it, and a wall with a ledge you climb across that again wasn't over any mud or anything.
The good obstacles were poorly managed with sudden drop-offs or not enough water. It was like they choose muddy spots rather than trying to create there own. There was giant rocks in the mud, multiple people had bruises and scrapes and were bleeding from the rocks. Nobody on site had any band-aids or anything to clean your cuts with either. We went to the ambulance on site and they told us they could only give us rubbing alcohol. No gauze or nothing. When we went to the volunteer tent assuming they would at least have a first aid kit. They told us to go back to the ambulance on site. Every volunteer at these obstacles should have had a first aid kit. And more water stations would have been nice when you are hiking up a mountain for freakin 2 miles. Dead fish and frogs were a problem in the muddy parts too.
It was poorly organized too. When we got there they had us sign and waiver and gave us a wristband. Nothing else. Not where to go or what to do. We had to ask, they told us to ask someone else. They don't announce your time so wear a watch I guess. The gift bag was garbage. Some cheap sunglasses, a paper crown, and cheap bag, and electrolyte packets and an energy drink. Everything was card only which apparently we learned that was only posted on facebook like a week before the event. It claimed there would be food vendors there but there was not. Only one place that sold like a handful of items.
The rinse off station was terrible. They were literally pulling dirty water from the bog beside the tent and put like a bunch of 5ft hoses all along the ground in there. Most hoses didn't have any a pressure and even if it did you basically had to sit on the ground to get cleaned off.
I will say that all of the volunteers on the course were super nice and helpful. and the people taking pictures were also very nice and good at their job. Although I don't know where or how you find the pictures they took.
I would not recommend. Try a different race.
Poorly organized
Really not worth it in my opinion. The courses weren’t secured very well, we saw one woman who had tried to climb the tire-ladder course and fell from the top hitting her head/face. There were also multiple muddy water parts of the course that had sudden drop offs. We arrived for the 8am start time and they didn’t even have the course clearly marked which ended up causing us to re-run almost the entire course. They don’t have volunteers at any of the obstacles except one (which required you to be submerged in muddy water under a downed fence) which made it hard to know what to do or to find help. One lady fell because of stepping on a large rock and twisting her ankle and it was a mile before we found a volunteer at the next water station to help her.
None of the workers/volunteers were wearing masks and we only saw the photographer twice but he didn’t offer to take our picture, we had to request it at the end. For over $100 I expected a little more from the sample bag than a vaginal cream and monster energy drink. The shirts are very small as well. The “rinse off” station is a bunch of garden hoses connected to ONE main hose, with half of them not working and even the one that did only giving out low water pressure. There were no trash cans or porta potty’s along the path itself. Also they didn’t make sure I signed a waiver?
Just in general they need more hired people or better training for volunteers, more safety measure like better secured obstacles, clearly defined paths(numbered), and more easy to reach volunteers/people to ask for help from if someone does get hurt.
Poor event planning
I think my issue with the venue is actually an issue with the event coordinators. There were some glaringly obvious problems.
Good things
Parking was easy and well set up
Lots of Porta potties (But no TP)
Registration was fast
Issues
I attended Muddy Princess 2021 at Baja Acres in Michigan and had the following concerns
Porta potties were not restocked with TP, over half the event they were empty.
A drone flew over the shower area and stayed there. There were tons of women and young girls showering and this drone was watching them. Not ok. Also not addressed by event leaders... whoever they were.
The shower area was less than 1/2 the size as 2019s event and poorly set up. There were only a few low pressure spickets hanging from one long poll in the middle of a tented off area. No option for privacy.
One of the obstacles had a metal grader blade holding an obstacle in place (floating blocks) that could easily be fallen on by participants. I watched as an older woman fell into it and hurt her shoulder. At the very least, it should have been capped.
There was not a medic team that patrolled the course or help posted along the way. In the 4 hours we were there I never once saw a medic team on the course. Only 2 obstacles had someone stationed there as guides. In 2019 I had a teammate break her arm on the course so I feel having appropriate medical available is very important.
It appears that the Muddy Princess has grown beyond what original creators envisioned and they have not adapted to the growth.
POOR EVENT PLANNING NOW WE LOSE OUT ON OUR MONEY!!
READ THE FINE PRINT!!
NO REFUND FOR ANY REASON!!
NO REFUND EVEN IF MUDDY PRINCESS CANCELS FOR THEIR OWN POOR EVENT PLANNING!!
Two years in a row our event was canceled. Last year was understandable because of covid. But we are now 11 days from our event and "for circumstances beyond their control" they are canceling again and "unfortunately can not offer a refund at this time"
We not only are out tickets right now but made matching shirts $$
This no refund policy is ridiculous! Must be nice to just cancel events left and right and bare no responsibility what so ever...
Aggervated!!!
I signed up back in May, it has been rescheduled twice because of Covid, Fine, I understand!! Now they changed it to next July. I ask for a refund, I get told no!!! This is BS!! They hold my money for tickets for next year!!! I should he able to get my money back because of the Covid!!!! This will be the last time i will do this. AND when you call , you cant talk to someone, bad business!!!!
People complained that maybe the water should of been the small 8 oz bottles, instead of the regular 16.9 oz because they felt bad for wasting water if they didn’t bottle all the water.
Disappointed - Portland OR 2019
This Muddy Princess was for Portland OR 9/8/19 (Not sure why it's not listed). I wasn't impressed with this mud run.
Bad Service-To start it off my wrist band was put on too tight so I went back to ask if I could get it replaced. The lady that put it on was busy so I just went to another person thinking it was no big deal. I went to another lady and simply ask, "Can I replace this wrist band it's too tight?" And it clearly was too tight. She replied offensively and almost angry, " Absolutely not! You need it to start your race and if you take if off you won't be able to get a goody bag!" WTF?! Did she think I was trying to scam the race? Kind of impossible if she was only going to replace the wrist band that I already had on and KEEP the old one. So I just went to the lady that originally put on my wrist band and she had no problems replacing it. (Thank you to her)
Water stations- Like another post mentions, water is full water bottles and are wasted. The water stations were poorly located. One water station was before an obstacle (usually are so you weren't able to take the bottles with you) and before a MAJOR hill to hike. There was no water for 3 more obstacles! We were dying of thrust. Oh yeah, and there was no water station at the finish line!
Pictures- Out of 18 obstacles only 4 had someone taking pictures. Out of the entire race I had 2 pictures taken. That's it, not even my shoe showed up in a photo bomb, or even a unflattering butt shot, nothing. I got 1 at the finish line (of course) and 1 only because we asked. So make sure to ask to have your picture taken a lot if you want pics. Or better yet have someone follow you/your group around to take pics if you want to remember the event.
Not so goody bag- The goody bag was a joke! It had a bottle of Vagisil, a Monster drink and 2 powder packets to mix in water. The stuff itself wasn't bad, it's just that all you got. I can get better samples walking around Costco.
To end on a good note, the race was awesome in that it was all women. That was a blast and everyone was friendly and helpful. Majority of the volunteers were nice too. And you do get a cool medal at the end :)

Good Vibes and Full of mud!
My daughter and I had so much fun! Muddy Princess is all about women empowerment and a great bonding experience. It wasn't too hard and wasn't too east, perfect for us :)
Can't wait for next year!
