Mediocre at Best
Ran this race the 2015 SF race (the 11+ mile "Classic Distance") and found it to be only so-so. As the name suggests, you are running through city streets--in which dodging bicyclists/pedestrians on sidewalks that are not blocked off should be considered an additional obstacle.
As for the official obstacles, they were pretty weak compared to most other races. They ranged from those that were a joke--like monkey bars that were so short in length that I got across in two swings (and I'm not super tall); to those that were just plain silly--like running under semi trailers). Others included climbing/jumping over stacked pallets on multiple occasions.
I (and my knees) also didn't like running that far on concrete/asphalt but that can't really be held against them because it is clearly advertised as an "urban" race.
The other HUGE inconvenience was that the packet pick-up was the day before--which was a huge PITA if you don't live in SF. C'mon guys, figure out how to make a race day pick-up work like everyone else.
In fact, the only real challenging part came from running the multitude of stairs inside AT&T park--but that got boring pretty quickly.
I guess I can see how this race (especially the shorter version) might appeal to some but, compared to the other options, it really doesn't stack up in my book.
Outstanding
Ran in 2012 and 2013 both very challenging, designed more for the running crowd. i.e. fewer challenges than a tough mudder. They changed up some of the challenges which was good - but left the gut check of running the Citi field stairs. All and all a great event.
Excellent
11 miles along Lake Michigan plus a dozen obstacles, including 500 stairs of Soldier Field 7 miles into the run. This was a challenging yet fun event. The festival after was fun as well. All in all it made for a great weekend in Chicago. Come prepared.
Epic
A great race with good obstacles that test your entire body!! Come prepared if you plan to tackle yourself!! Or race with your buds I you want to tackle it with someone!! See you in the front 2013 NYC!! Men's Health lets do it!!! "Bring it home". Haha.
