1st BF and Loved it!!
I have done a few OCR races for different promotions, but this was my first BF. I was very pleased with the course layout and the staff was excellent!!! I have and will continue to recommend BF to my friends!!!
AWESOME!!! Was not excited about the venue, but seriously impressed with the layout and execution of the course. They get it, it's obsticle course racing, Not a mud fest, not a out and back trail run, do some obstacles, out and back trail run...etc. Never was able to get the run on because those impressive obstacles kept showing up. Looking forward for next years "Greater Salt Lake" race!!
I'm Ready for More!!!
Loved the obstacles. The traversing walls and the rig were some of the toughest I've seen. The distance was great, not too long or too short. It could have used some more water or mud obstacles. The crew were very friendly and I loved the starting block announcer. He did a great job pumping us up at the beginning. I'm ready for the next race. Bring it back to Utah!
Battlefrog UT 2016
Fun but the obstacle building crew cut some corners.
I have three years of mud racing experience. With me on this race I took one old timer like me and five newcomers to mud racing. I'll break down the good and the could be improved.
Good
Nice atmosphere, the children's race was well organized. The atmosphere got me and my team pumped up for the race. There were several obstacles that were innovative. I really thought the platinum rig was challenging and a real arm pumper. The gas can carry ended up being much more of a challenge than I assumed it would be when I saw it.
My newcomer friends really enjoyed all of the obstacles and really had a great time. The various paths through obstacles based off skill really made it fun.
Improvements
I really needed more variety! It felt to me that 90 percent of them obstacles were climbing over walls. I wanted to see some more innovation.
Not safe, the monkey bars were over a pit of 4.5 ft deep muddy water. one member of my team fell into the water and bruised his tail bone because the water was too shallow.
There was minimal mud at this event! The only mud obstacle was mounds of grounds. This obstacle only had any real mud in the last pit.
General thoughts for improvement
The obstacles felt cheap. The bars I climbed on bent ant twisted. The cargo net was webbing instead of rope. I could tell that these guys are newer to the obstacle game. A bit more investment some innovation and more care about their obstacles and they can be great.
Flat, fast, and bring your strength. Battlefrog is one of the few race series that will take a flat 10 miles on a flat piece of land and make great racers take 2 hours to complete (if they complete it at all). Everyone who kept their bands through the 4 rigs and 2 rounds of the most evil wall traverse I've come across should be congratulated. The volunteers were beyond great, the obstacles were brutal, and the PORTOLETS WERE CLEANED AFTER EVERY USE! Well done Battlefrog.
I loved this event. Especially the addition of novice, intermediate and elite lanes. This allows races to choose based on their ability and it does away with wait times. The novice lanes had some short lines but the other two were clear at every obstacle. The obstacles were challenging like none other I have done, the volunteers were especially encouraging and engaging with the races. The parking was pricey but check in, photo ops and refreshments were laid out well. Hydration stations on the course were plentiful and the electrolytes were a nice surprise. Overall, toughest one I've done and the best one. Would definitely do another!
I just started doing OCRs last year, and the Nashville BattleFrog Series event was by far the most fun, as well as the most difficult OCR that I have competed in so far. The course was set up at Wooley's Off Road park, and the 8K course had a ton of hills that really worked you over! There was not a lot of mud in this particular course, which was actually a good thing considering the elevation changes of the course as well as the obstacles. That was challenge enough, without a lot of mud.
I am not sure I'd say this one is beginner friendly (it's tough!), but by no means let that scare you away if you are a newbie. But OCR veterans will really enjoy a BF race! It's a great atmosphere, and a lot of fun. Just make sure you do plenty of pull ups when training for a BattleFrog!
Oh yeah, the medal that you get upon completion of the event is pretty awesome, too! :)
This was my 5th mud OCR out of the previous 6 months and it was the hardest of the bunch. If you're just starting out or trying it for the first time, make sure you've trained up a little bit for the Frog. Long race, difficult obstacles, and this particular location was sandy river bottom 75% of the time (calf burn). That being said, this crew is professional....well-spaced water breaks, organized from start to finish, and plenty of entertainment before and after.
