Course Description:

18 Hour Race: Expect a point-to-point expedition feel for much of the race but with optional checkpoints and a “short course” option (skipping the last transition area) to help you finish on time. Based on the preliminary course design, mileages to get EVERY CP are as follows:
60-70 miles of biking on two-tracks, gravel and paved roads. No road bikes are allowed.
12-18 miles of trekking/running, mostly off-trail through beautiful, runnable woods.
16-19 miles of incredible, scenic river paddling (easy to moderate difficulty).
Solo racers allowed in the 18-hour race if you have a tracking device/safety beacon (not a mobile phone). Here’s one rental option.

8 Hour Race: A good option for beginning navigators/adventure racers but with plenty of challenge for experienced teams. The intent of the course design is to allow top teams to clear (get every checkpoint, aka CP) the course in six to seven hours while others will have a shot to clear it or get the majority of checkpoints before the eight-hour deadline. Biking will be your primary mode of transportation around the course and you’ll stop at various transition areas to orienteer/trek and paddle. This year, all teams will visit the transition areas in the same order. However, at the orienteer/trek areas you can do CPs in any order or skip checkpoints that you can’t find. You may also skip the final orienteering section in order to make it to the finish in time. Based on the preliminary course design, mileages to get EVERY CP are as follows:
26-32 miles of biking on two-tracks, packed gravel and paved roads. Road bikes will not be allowed. At this point, there will be no biking on dirt singletrack trails.
6-7 miles of trekking/running on and off the trails in beautiful, runnable woods.
7-8 miles of paddling on an incredible, scenic river. Requires basic steering (we can provide instruction beforehand or consider scheduling a paddle lesson with Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus in Grand Rapids or another instructor)

Aid Stations:

Water and Gatorade may be available at various points but fill your bladders/bottles when you have the opportunity.

Spectators:

We would encourage you to invite friends and family to watch the race. We will offer race maps to spectators (first come basis) so they can check out some of the fun challenges. Keep in mind that spectating an adventure race is an adventure in itself as they must always be moving ahead of racers to see a lot of the action.

Other:

Our charity partner for the race is Wexford-Osceola Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide.

Teams are encouraged!
