BattleFrog NY-NJ-CT Race Turning Into USA vs. Canada Challenge

By |July 30th, 2014|

As if it were not exciting enough with challenging obstacles and live demonstrations featuring U.S. Navy SEALs and a McDonnell-Douglas 600 Special Mission Bird helicopter, leaders of BattleFrog today announced that its NY-NJ-CT event is shaping up to be a United States of America vs. Canada challenge with top-ranked obstacle course race athletes from both nations announcing that they will compete on Saturday, August 2, 2014 in Englishtown, New Jersey.

Colorado Obstacles Racers Trifecta

By |July 30th, 2014|

This past weekend in Utah was huge for over 2 dozen Colorado Obstacles Racers. We all completed our Spartan Trifecta. For those of you who do not know what that means, it is completing the 3 distances in the Spartan racing series. The Sprint which is usually 4 + miles, the Super 8 + miles and the Beast 10+. By all accounts we completed a marathon of obstacle racing. My races were 27 miles total with over 90 obstacles.

Gear Review: Geigerrig Pressurized Hydration Packs

By |July 29th, 2014|

Ever have a certain product that you use just about every day and can’t be without? Well for me, this is it. Geigerrig Hydration backpacks are simply one of a kind and stand-alone from the rest of the competition! Geigerrig Hydration packs are a total game changer! What makes these hydration packs different from others is its pressurized system to squirt out water wherever needed. All you do is pump it (it comes with a easy to reach hand pump) to create the pressure & you're ready to drink or spray it. They are one of my favorite things I own for OCR’s.

The Fall and Rise of Dirty Girl Mud Run

By |July 28th, 2014|

On the morning of Thursday, July 24, EventBrite started receiving a few emails and calls from customers looking for Dirty Girl refunds. While the slow trickle wasn't too peculiar, demands for refunds come with the territory - even for events that have a No Refund policy that you must click to accept before registering - as the flow of inquiries grew into a torrent of angry customers, the staff needed to get to the bottom if it. Dirty Girl had to date been a great customer, and there was no advance notice that the Charleston, West Virginia date was in danger of being held. The confusion gave way to a sickening feeling when the EventBrite staff pulled up Dirty Girl's Facebook page, and saw the comment above. With the WV event cancelled without notice, the worst was yet to come.

Race Director Interview: Bad Ass Dash

By |July 21st, 2014|

As a keen obstacle racer I have met some fantastic people during events and while networking online. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Sharenow (Brian) who is one of the creators of the BADASS Dash. His company has been associated with sporting events for over 15 years and became more focused on OCR in the last 10. Brian has been the Race Director for the last 2 years and works with a crew of talented people who are all passionate about building a fun and safe event for everyone to enjoy.

Out of Order: When Races Fail

By |July 18th, 2014|

The hard fact is this; businesses fail. It happens every day, all over the globe. Whether they are a Detroit carmaker or the corner bakery, the collapse of these businesses inflict plenty of damage - both primary (the owners, employees, banks, etc.) and collateral (those employees' families, 3rd parties, and customers) and he fallout can get pretty ugly; social media makes damn sure that happens.

Spartan Race Inks Deal with NBC Sports

By |July 14th, 2014|

The announcement is the culmination of a goal set by Joe for Spartan at the outset of its creation, a goal realized largely by ensuring that Spartan provided a best-in-class obstacle racing product globally. The collective efforts of our team should be applauded in this accomplishment, and the show is something in which I hope all of you take great pride and ownership.

Is Spartan Race Crushing OCR Competition?

By |July 13th, 2014|

Since earlier in 2014 when OCRWC announced their intentions to develop a world championship that isn't tied to one specific brand of events, there have been a few jabs that have been thrown in their direction from Joe, in conversations and interviews he has used variations of "we only acknowledge one OCR World Championship, and it's held in Vermont each September." This was completely to be expected, Joe and his ever-growing team has sunk millions of dollars into developing and advertising the Spartan brand all over the world, it only makes sense that he would protect his investment when asked about a direct competitor. He's spoken with so much vitrol in the past about his distaste for the tactics of Will Dean and Tough Mudder's when both races were fighting to develop a foothold in the industry. His dismissive comments when asked about OCRWC clearly didn't seem like he was lowering the boom on the fledgeling event. Or did it?

Gear Review: Prosoks

By |May 26th, 2014|

The performance socks market is expanding because let’s face it, you might train for years to have the body of Adonis coated in bronze but a quarter-sized bleeding blister on your foot could put you on the DNF list. There are many different options available out there with varying blends of fibers and styles, each touting their own merits, but it comes down to figuring out for yourself which pair of socks works best for you in specific situations.
