The Fuego y Agua Survival Run race begins today. We conclude our pre-race coverage with a look at the team race.
Tomorrow begins the 2015 Fuego y Agua Survival Run, yesterday we looked at who are some of the men to watch in the race. Today we focus on the ladies. The women's race has drawn in some exceptionally fit and strong women this year and this looks like it will be the year that a female completes this race in Nicaragua. In the past only 4 men have completed the race with one finishing two year. Could this be the year that the women break the trend? We think so and here are some of the women who could do it.
Fuego y Agua is just days away with the start of the race Wednesday afternoon. While we might not know what is in store for the racers we can look at some of the top competitors in each of the three races. Today we focus on the men's race and a few of the top men. While nothing is certain in a Survival Run these men have proved in the past that they are strong, tough, and mentally ready to take on this year's Survival Run.
For the most extreme of the OCR community the Fuego y Agua Survival Run is just around the corner. As the athletes get ready to head down to Nicaragua for the 3rd year of the event, Race Director, Josue Stephens is putting the finishing touches on what will surely be another challenging event. Athletes from around the globe are ready to take on this 30 hour challenge covering 80+km depending on the routes they take.
Participants can qualify for the Warrior Dash World Championship by signing up for a competitive wave at any of the 30+ events internationally and placing in the top 25 of their gender. “Since Warrior Dash’s inception in 2009, the obstacle racing industry has seen tremendous change and growth, and is becoming an internationally recognized sport,” says VP of Marketing at Warrior Dash, Tad Jenkins. “After a remarkably successful first Warrior Dash World Championship, we’re pleased to bring back the premier 5K competition for a second year in Tennessee and continue the challenge for our elite Warrior athletes.”
Since the beginning of obstacle racing has been more like a chain of islands than a unified sport, each company working independently trying to grab as much of the market as possible. This side of our sport has been chronicled over and over again but this article is not about the infighting or which company is trying to outdo another. This article looks at what is happening at the grassroots level of the sport...
The early buzz may be about the new obstacles (I promise, the details are coming soon), but the real changes on the course alter the dynamic of what it takes to become a Tough Mudder: Teamwork. Many of the new or upgraded obstacles require teamwork to get over, and approximately half of the 2015 Tough Mudder course cannot be completed alone. Remember the days when you ran up Everest solo? No more. Climbing out of Mud Mile pits by yourself? Nope. Hold Your Wood? Bring a team for these telephone poles. "We didn't set out to make it tougher, we decided to deliver new obstacles and challenged for Mudders to overcome - together."
Atlas Race10887980_10204595838390361_1951751608_n continues to make waves in the obstacle racing world with another announcement on top of the recent Heart of Texas ThrowDown. This one is for all the west coast obstacle racers. The Best of the West Challenge is a three part series within Atlas Race that includes NorCal, Medford, and Portland. Racers that complete all three events in 2015 will earn a special medal and t-shirt for completing the Challenge
The course designers over at Tough Mudder have come up with a new way to challenge participants who sign up for their events in 2015. Multiple sources including Sports Illustrated Online and DNAinfo.com are reporting that tear gas maybe be included in the arsenal of obstacles this coming year.
Fuego y Agua Events has partnered with us at Mud Run Guide to provide pre- and post-race interviews with athletes and race directors, live updates as the race unfolds, and on-course insight from Rachelanne Gladden. Gladden will use her years of working with and volunteering at races like Peak Races - Death Race, past Fuego y Agua Events, SISU Iron, and other extreme endurance events.
