How I Got into OCR: An Off-Season Tale

By |January 17th, 2018|

I signed up for my first Spartan Race in the fall of 2016 after a coach at my gym decided to get a team together. I had been working out pretty regularly for about a year after being away from exercise for a long time. I ran my first Broad Street Run in Philadelphia (10-miler) a few months earlier and was training for the upcoming Philadelphia Half Marathon,

I AM OCR: PD Fighter Style

By |December 11th, 2017|

My name is John Carmichael, and I am an athlete diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It does not define me, but it is now a part of my life. I am also a Bronze Star decorated Army Combat veteran and Licensed Practical Nurse. I was diagnosed in March of 2016 with Parkinson's disease, and my focus has primarily been endurance bicycling to control my symptoms and manage my disease.

From Disability to OCR: Troy Giesbrecht

By |March 6th, 2017|

Troy Giesbrecht has been a long-time friend and member of my family since I met my husband 11 years ago. I never understood truly what he went through to get from where he was in life, to where he is today, but I’m truly inspired. This man has taken basically a sentence to be another statistic to showing the world that you can turn your life around.

Spotlight: Philly Spartans

By |February 14th, 2017|

February 5, 2017. Alex, one of the founders of the Philly Spartans, beamed with pride in knowing that bit of history. He was mysteriously clad in Prussian blue. The other teammates groan, knowing another tough workout was about to begin.

Profile: Jonathan Lopez of Operation Enduring Warrior

By |January 2nd, 2017|

My first introduction to Jonathan Lopez was at the dinner before the 2016 Operation Enduring Warrior takeover of the Spartan Ft. Bragg Sprint. I had spoken to OEW VP of communications, Kelly Farmer prior to the event and asked her to pair me with one of the many incredible adaptive athletes that would be there, so I could follow their story. She did not hesitate when she suggested Jonathan.

I Am OCR: Juan Carlos Obando

By |October 24th, 2016|

My name is Juan Carlos Obando, I am 42 years old from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and I am an OCR. I started doing OCR more than 5 years ago but got more serious about my sport about 3 years ago. Like many of us in the OCR community I have had many struggles, and many ups & downs, but my love for competing, my love for training is what lifted me every time.
