Have you ever wondered how you should behave at an obstacle course race to not embarrass yourself? Or do you just forget about etiquette and act like a caveman? If so, here are my personal 10 unofficial rules of OCR etiquette to show good manners on and off the course.
In just a couple of days, 1600+ athletes will line up in the desert for the culminating race of Tough Mudder, the 24-hour long World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM). There is a lot on the line this year, more than any previous year and more than people realize.
Based on the Tough Mudder website, you’d have been forgiven for thinking that the World's Toughest Mudder men’s race was going to be a 5-way titanic tussle between 2 amazing athletes from the USA (Trevor Cichosz, Chad Trammel) and 3 from the Commonwealth (Jon Albon, Ryan Atkins, Austin Azar). Not mentioned on that page is a certain Robert Killian, the only other human to have the coveted 100 miler jacket.
If you’ve ever run a Tough Mudder, you know its credo is recited before each race. My favorite line from that inspirational speech goes a little something like, “I don’t whine. Kids whine.”
When I started in OCR five years ago, I made a lot of rookie mistakes. OCR itself was a rookie sport. There wasn’t a lot of fine gear like we have today. Still, some of that gear is less than, shall we say, appropriate for the course. Here are some tips and suggestions for you to avoid an OCR wardrobe malfunction.

Tough Mudder has been making huge waves this year. They went from three event types (Half, Tough Mudder and World’s Toughest Mudder (WTM)) to a full lineup of seven events (TMX, 5k, Half, Full, Tougher, Toughest, and WTM) including seven CBS Televised episodes. They even announced a last-minute Tougher Mudder Championship
One small problem—no one in my circles of friends, family, or acquaintances knew what OCR stood for, literally or figuratively. Not one to let that take the proverbial wind out of my sails, I did what anyone looking for reliable information would do—I took to the magical realm of social media.

After running many varied races from New York to South Carolina, I started to factor in expenses while traveling. So, while searching race websites, I noticed a volunteer section. Bingo! I can volunteer at races. I can either volunteer first and then run the race, race then volunteer, or simply use a free race credit or discount to run a future race.
