OCR News Weekly – July 21, 2017
Welcome to OCR News Weekly for Friday, July 21 2017. Tough Mudder goes X, Spartan Doubles up on Palmerton, The OCR World Championships goes long down under, Savage Race, Warrior Dash, Rugged Maniac, Bone Frog and much more!
Happy Friday to you all, I’ll list some of the events coming up next weekend at the end, but Let’s jump right in and recap some of what went down last weekend in the world of OCR:
Last week, Tough Mudder kicked off their made-for-TV TMX format: 1 mile with 10 obstacles and 10 workouts with $25,000 on the line.
Now, Much like American Ninja Warrior or any live-action TV shows, there was a embargo set by TM on presenting the results or photos online or social media – guidelines we took seriously and adhered to by the way – only to have the results splashed all over facebook within 24 hours. By now, you probably know who walked away with the cash but if you’re like me and hate spoilers, skip forward 13 seconds. On the guy’s side, Kevin Righi took third, Ryan Atkins was runner-up, and Hunter McIntyre nabbed the top spot and $25k.
For the women, top honors and payday went to Corinna Coffin , followed by Cassidy Watton, and Jennifer Dancer in 3rd.
That’s quite a list of top men and women, and I’m proud to say 5 our of 6 have been contestants with me on OCR Warrior!
Tune in to CBS on August 27 at 1pm ET to catch all the action.
Saturday & Sunday, Spartan Race returned for the second weekend in Palmerton PA at Blue Mountain Ski Area – the same day that Joe DeSena was tackling the 50 miler at North Face Endurance Challenge in Blue Mountain, Ontario. I got a chance to sit down with Joe and chat about racing, life, family, and Spartan’s 24 hour event in Iceland. Spots are still available, for that adventure, and it seems like a pretty wild event!
Rugged Maniac was in action in Vancouver, British Colombia, Conquer the Gauntlet stomped through Wichita, Kansas, Savage Race hosted their first New England event in Boston, Massachusetts, Bone Frog brought their Tier 1 challenge to Ohio, Warrior Dash got muddy in Nebraska, and Muck Fest MS visited Denver, Colorado.
Tuesday, July 18th was a special date for the world of OCR, 8 years ago Warrior Dash was born on a paintball field in Joliet, Illinois – until then, best known for a few scenes from the Blues Brothers. I got the chance to sit down with Co-founder / Co-CEO Ryan Kunkel to go over some highlights of where Warrior Dash has been and where they are heading this year & beyond. With over 3 million participants, Warrior Dash continues to grow and so has their donation to the St, Jude Children’s Cancer Research Center, over $18 million dollars donated so far to help fight cancer in children. In 2017, Warrior Dash has seen some strong numbers across the country and has even added additional dates to their remaining schedule. You can check out my interview on mudrunguide.com
The 18th also marked an extremely special day for those of us across here at Mud Run Guide and across the world of OCR as Margaret Schlatcher – founder of Dirt in Your Skirt, one of the first “pro” female athletes in the world of OCR, an original World’s Toughest Mudder competitor, and our editor-in-chief tied the knot in a beautiful New England ceremony to another member of an OCR Family – Forest Call, a younger brother to the Godfather of OCR, Hobie Call. From all of us here, we with Margaret & Forest the happiest and most loving of unions, and we’re proud to welcome Forest into our family.
Yesterday, the OCR World Championships team announced a project that has been in the works for quite some time, a 24 hour enduro taking place next June in Sydney Australia. In partnership with True Grit and Destination New South Wales, the event creates a new OCR World Championship “endurance” championship and pairs with the 15k event at the 2018 OCRWC to create a Dual Crown with extra prize incentives for pro and age group winners in both events. Check out mudrunguide.com for more info and the announcement video.
Coming up this weekend:
Warrior Dash will be in North Lawrence, Ohio
Rugged Maniac and Tough Mudder both visit Long Island, NY
5k Foam Fest travels to Ottowa
Spartan Race has a crazy weekend with the continuation of their Stadium Series at National’s Park in Washington, DC, a Sprint in Alberta, Canada, a Beast/Ultra Beast in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a sprint at Fort Knox in Kentucky.
Green Beret Challenge returns to a wild venue in Georgia at the Guardian Center as well.
